United Nations Human Rights Council


The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is an inter-governmental body within the United Nations System. The UNHRC is the successor to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR, herein CHR), and is a subsidiary body of the United Nations General Assembly. The council works closely with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and engages the United Nations' Special procedures.

Petition seeking justice for Captain Saurabh Kalia

A petition has been filed before the UNHRC seeking an investigation into the torture and killing of Captain Saurabh Kalia and five jawans of the 4 Jat Regiment (infantry) of India by Pakistan troops during the Kargil conflict of 1999. The petition was filed on December 7 with Juan E Medez, special rapporteur on torture in Geneva. The petitioners include Dr NK Kalia, father of Capt Saurabh Kalia.
