United Nations General Assembly


The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA/GA) is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations and the only one in which all member nations have equal representation. Its powers are to oversee the budget of the United Nations, appoint the non-permanent members to the Security Council, receive reports from other parts of the United Nations and make recommendations in the form of General Assembly Resolutions. It has also established a wide number of subsidiary organs.

The General Assembly has 193 members.

Recognition of Palestine to a "non-member state"

On 29 November 2012, the General Assembly has approved the de facto recognition of the sovereign state of Palestine. Earlier Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas has called the General Assembly to issues its long overdue "birth certificate". U.S. along with Israel and few other countries have opposed against the move to change the upgrade the status of Palestine from "entity" to "non-member state". 138 votes were polled in favor and nine against, while there are 41 abstentions. Three countries didn't take part in the vote.
