    On Saturday July 4, 2009 night, an emergency Extraordinary General Assembly was held at the OSA Headquarters in Washington. 33 of the 34 members have voted to suspend the participation of Honduras in response to the coup in the last week of June 09. This is the first time that a OSA member state was suspended from the Americas group since the Inter-American Democratic Charter (IDC) is singed in 2001. The decision to suspend was taken in accordance to Article 21 of the IDC. Nicaragua and Venezuela have called for a hard action on the new new Honduras Government.

    Suspension of Cuba

    Cuba was a member of OSA but was suspended in 1962 according to a resolution of the Eigth Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs (1962) because of its allining with the then USSR.
