About Election Commission of India

The Election Commission of India is the premier body that is responsible for the conduction of Government elections in India.

Nasim Zaidi is the current Chief Election Commissioner of India.

V S Sampath was the current Chief Election Commissioner of India in 2014. HS Brahma and SNA Zaidi are the two other election commissioners as on 2014.

2014 Elections

Election Commission of India, on 5 March 2014, has announced the schedule for the general elections in India. Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath, along with election commissioners HS Brahma and SNA Zaidi announced the schedule. The 2014 Lok Sabha elections and Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim will be held in 9 phases spread across 72 days. Mar 5, 2014


On March 2, 2009, the ECI announced dates for the 15th Lok Sabha election.

In November 09, ECI made significant decision to allow eunuchs/transsexuals to indicate their gender as other where they do not want to be described as male or female.

In January 2010, as part of its Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the ECI held bilateral meetings with election commissions of several countries for future collaboration. Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, termed ECI as one of the pillars of Indian democracy that has in the past 60 years acquitted itself well in the onerous task of conducting elections to Parliament and the State Legislatures.

In April 2010, the ECI has decided that a concerted effort should be made to achieve 100 percent Electors Photo Identity Cards (EPICs) coverage and photo coverage in electoral rolls by the end of the current year.

In June 2010, expressing concern over the alarming proportion of paid news in the Indian media the ECI directed officials to closely monitor poll-related media reports.

On July 30, 2010, SY Quraishi took over as the 17th Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India from Navin Chawla. He became the first Muslim CEC.

In August 2010, former Union Power Secretary Harishankar Brahma has been appointed as the Election Commissioner in the ECI.

In September 2010, Minister of Law and Justice Dr. M. Veerappa Moily appreciated the commendable work done by the ECI over the years since its inception in 1950 despite cynicism and scepticism expressed from various quarters on different occasions.

The ECI announced a six-phase State Assembly poll for Bihar to be held between October 21 and November 20, 2010. The Model Code of Conduct came into effect in Bihar with the announcement of the elections.


Election Commission of India asked Centre to act on allegations of manipulation of opinion polls by some organizations. The EC received a complaint from Congress. The allegations involved conspiracy to prepare false reports for publishing misleading information on consideration of illegal payment of money in return. Mar 1, 2014


Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi said that the Assembly polls in Bihar will be held in September-October 2015. A reworked expenditure monitoring system will be deployed to curb money and muscle power. May 17, 2015
