Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) is an Indian organization engaged in research of new technologies for defence and combat.

Ballistic Missile Defence programme

The Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) programme is aimed at protecting India's vital assets from being targeted by ballistic missiles. India has conducted seven ballistic interceptor missiles tests so far. Six of them have been successful.

The first interceptor missiles test took place in November 2006 which was successful.

The second test took place in December 2007.

DRDO has conducted its eighth ballistic interceptor missile test between November 19 and 22, 2012. In the test, a modified Prithvi missile would take off from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, Odisha and the interceptor from the Wheeler Island would blast it off in endo-atmosphere at an altitude of 15km to 16km.

The DRDO, on 12 December 2012, has conducted a successful test of its nuclear-capable surface-to-surface Agni-I missile from a military base in Odisha. The intermediate-range ballistic missile that was tested can strike a target 700 kilometers away. The test was conducted on Wheeler Island near Dhamra in Bhadrak district.

Prithvi-II test fired successfully
On December 20, 2012 India successfully test-fired Prithvi-II missile which was indigenously developed and is nuclear capable. The missile has a strike range of 350 km. The test was carried out at Chandipur near Balasore in Odisha. The missile is developed by DRDO and is already inducted into the Indian Armed forces. It is capable of carrying 500 kg to 1000 kg of warheads.

Agni-V

India successfully test fires Agni-V on January 31, 2015. The missile has a strike range of more than 5,000 km. It can delivery a nuclear warhead of over one-tonne-deep inside China. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the scientists of DRDO for the success. Two successful tests of basic version of Agni-V were conduced in 2012 and 2013. The work for the missile started in 2009. Agni-V is likely to be inducted in 2016.
