Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission


The Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) was formed on November 1, 1956.

History

The commission was earlier known as the Andhra Service Commission when it was formed in 1953. The Andhra Service Commission was based on the regulations of Madras Public Service Commission. Later in 1956, The APPSC was formed by merging the Andhra and Hyderabad Public Service Commissions.

Functions

The major function of APPSC is that it makes Direct Recruitment under the Article 320(1) of the Constitution of India. Those recruited are mostly lecturers, doctors, engineers, deputy collectors, forest officers, police officers, and clerks in Andhra Pradesh.

Controversies

The majority of the members of the APPSC have filed a write petition before the AP High Court on 21 December 2012. The petition was filed by Pochiah and five others who brought to the notice of the court that the Commission had to evolve its own procedure for selections as observed by the Supreme Court of India. They made APPSC chairperson Rachel Chatterjee and secretary Poonam Malakondiah as party respondents and claimed that they were acting on the dictates of the government. The Court has ordered notices to be issued to the respondents and has adjourned the case by three weeks.
