Zee News


Zee News is a news and current affairs channel, which was founded in 1999. Initially most of the programs were broadcast in English. Around 2003-04, after the success of Aaj Tak, Zee News was converted into a complete Hindi news channel.

Zee News is a part of Zee News Ltd (ZNL) which is a part of Essel Group which operates news and regional entertainment channels and is listed on stock exchange as Zee News Limited. It was demerged from Zee Entertainment Enterprises ltd in 2006.

Controversies

Alleged Extortion Attempt

Two senior editors of Zee News - Sudhir Chaudhary, head of Zee News, and Samir Ahluwalia, Editor of Zee Business, were arrested on accusations of attempting to extort Rs. 100 crore from Congress MP Naveen Jindal's company Jindal Steel Power Limited (JSPL), in order to not run stories of the coal blocks allocations controversy involving the company. Sudhir Chaudhary and Samir Ahluwalia were initially sent on a two-day police custody and a 14-day judicial custody later.

Three other officials of Zee - Jawahar Goel, A Mohan and Amit Tripathi were also issued notices in the case.

Timeline

November 28, 2012: Delhi court has rejected the bail petition of both and remanded them in two-day police custody.

November 29, 2012: Three of Zee group's senior officials joined police investigations. Jawahar Goel, brother of Subash Chadra and MD of Dish TV, A Mohan, a top legal aide of Zee group and Amit Tripathi, sales head of Zee joined the investigations.

November 30, 2012: Sudhir Chaudhary and Samir Ahluwalia were sent to a 14-day judicial custody.

December 1, 2012: Delhi court has deferred the hearing of bail plea of Samir Ahluwalia and Sudhir Chaudhary. The plea will come up for hearing again on Monday.

December 5, 2012: Zee Group Chairman Subhash Chandra had moved an anticipatory bail plea before a local court in New Delhi. The move came a day after the Delhi Police asked him to join investigations in connection with the alleged Rs. 100 crore extortion bid by two editors of the Zee channel. An anticipatory bail plea for Zee Group MD Puneet Goenka was also filed.

December 8, 2012: Delhi court remands Sudhir Chaudhary and Samir Ahluwalia to police custody for two days.

December 10, 2012: The Delhi Police moved an application seeking permission for a lie detector test on the two Zee editors facing charges of extortion as well as on Zee Group chairman Subhash Chandra. They are also seeking to conduct a voice sample test.

December 12, 2012: Zee Group Chairman Subhash Chandra has agreed to undergo a lie-detector test, but his two arrested editors have refused to do so.

December 17, 2012: The two arrested Zee editors were granted bail.

December 21, 2012: Zee Group editor Sudhir Chaudhary files a defamation suit against Congress MP Naveen Jindal and 16 other employees of his company. The court fixed January 3, 2013 as the date for the consideration of the complaint.

Inter-Ministerial group to examine complaints

On 19 December 2012, Information & Broadcasting minister Manish Tewari told Lok Sabha that an inter-minsterial committee would examine the complaint made against Zee News channel by several parliamentarians asking for the channel's license to be scrapped. The politicians expressed concern over the Rs. 100 crore extortion charge in the FIR filed by Jindal group against two Zee editors.
