About Dr. Manmohan Singh

Dr. Manmohan Singh is the Prime Minister of India. He is the 13th and current prime minister of the country. Manmohan Singh is the second Prime Minister after Jawaharlal Nehru to return to power after completing a full five year term. He is also the first Sikh to become the Prime Minister of India.

Personal Biography

Manmohan Singh was born in Gah (now in Punjab, Pakistan) in 1932. His family migrated to India during its partition in 1947. He married Gurusharan Kaur in 1958.

Manmohan Singh and Gurusharan Kaur have three children - Upinder, Daman and Amrit.

  • On September 25, 09, relatives of Manmohan Singh and his other well-wishers celebrated his 77th birthday by distributing sweets and holding prayers for his long life and good health.
  • Manmohan watches carefully about what he eats. He prefers dahi chaval or kadi chaval, (which incidentally is just the north Indian version of the thayir saadam of the Coromandel Coast). He stays clear of desserts, probably because he is diabetic. His wife Gursharan Kaur keeps an eagle eye on what he is served when he travels.

Manmohan Singh and the Indo-US Civil Nuclear deal

In July 2008, the Congress announced it will go ahead with Indo-US Civil Nuclear deal even if Left Parties withdraw support. Dr. Singh dismissed allgeations that IAEA safeguards agreement would compromise India's strategic programme. However, the BJP continued to lampoon on Singh and Sonia Gandhi on their continued defence of the draft text. The deal has put the UPA Government into trouble forcing it to go for a Motion of Confidence in the Lok Sabha

U.S. Ambassador to India, David C. Mulford said US will convince Pak not to vote against India at IAEA at the Vienna meet. Earlier, the G8 nations confirmed support to India over Indo-US nuclear deal and that they are ready to help meet its energy needs.

In July 2008, the Government of India unveiled text of IAEA safeguards pact IAEA. Reacting on the development, Manmohan said his government would approach the IAEA "very soon" and once it takes the decision the process in this regard was expected to move "pretty fast".

Involvement into Corporate Affairs

Only July 14, Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani met Prime Minister over windfall tax. The Communist Party of India-Marxist reacted back quickly and blamed Manmohan Singh that his Prime Minister Office is turning into a lobby office for corporates.

Motion of Confidence in the Lok Sabha - July 21-22, 2008

On July 5, 2008 the Bharatiya Janata Party's Prime Ministerial candidate, L K Advani asked PM to seek vote of confidence in Parliament. Manmohan was with other Senior Congress Leaders at the UPA allies, CWC hold meetings held to discuss their political strategy post Left parties support withdrawl

He met President Patil and briefed about the special session in the Lok Sabha.

The Manmohan Singh-led UPA Government won the trust vote by 275 to 256 in the Lok Sabha. Dr. Singh gave his reply to the debate in writing to the Speaker in which he advised Advani to change astrologers and stop abuse against.

Manmohan Singh met Somnath Chatterjee a day after the later is expelled from his party membership. He conveyed wishes to Chatterjee who turned 79 on July 25.

On July 25, Bush called up PM and said he wanted to move ahead on N-deal as soon as possible

At Major Economies Meeting

Speaking at the Major Economies Meeting (MEM) at Sapporo in July 2008, Singh said we cannot consider quantitative restrictions on our greenhouse gas emissions. At the G8 Nations Summit at Hokkaido, Japan, he called upon the G8 nations to keep up their promises and that India's first priority is spurring economic growth so that it could eradicate dire poverty.

Manmohan Singh visit to the US - September 2008

Manmohan said he will convene a meeting with all members of Planning Commissionto discuss about the nuclear energy programme before his scheduled US-visit. Singh's visit begins on September 22 on his 10-day visit. He will be make a speech on the Millennium Development Goals and meet U.S. President George W Bush at the White House Oval Office on September 25, possibly sign the Indo-US nuclear deal, address the UN General Assembly on September 26

Manmohan Singh visit to the France - September 2008

After his US Visit, Manmohan Singh visited France on September 27 where he attended the Indo-European Summit at Marseilles on September 29 and hold a meeting with the French President Nicolas Sarkozy. India and France are working towards signing a framework agreement to start nuclear commerce between the two countries. The agreement is likely to be signed in Dr. Singh's presence on September 30.

In October 08, he went on a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir to inaugurate Baglihar project, laid foundation stone for chancery-cum-residence complex of the Embassy of Palestine at New Delhi, reaffirmed support to the Palestinian cause to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, participated in a cabinet meet review over attacks on Christians, attended Duesshera celebrations at Subhash Maidan, directed Minister E. Ahmed to visit violence-hit Assam. He met Chinese President Hu Jintao on the sidelines of Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit in Beijing. Singh said he was not happy with shifting of Tata Motors from Singur. He expressed concern about ongoing inflation and financial crisis. Speaking on recent violence in Maharashtra and its backlash in Bihar, he said Political parties should realise gravity of situation fanning regional tensions. Back home, he attended Granth Sahib tercentenary celebrations, inaugurated Department of Atomic Energy facilities.

In December 08, he hailed the smooth conduct of J-K elections.

In January 09, he was admitted in AIIMS for undergoing bypass surgery
