Meningitis


Meningitis

Meningitis is inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, known collectively as the meninges. The inflammation may be caused by infection with viruses, bacteria, or other microorganisms, and less commonly by certain drugs. Meningitis can be life-threatening because of the inflammation's proximity to the brain and spinal cord; therefore the condition is classified as a medical emergency.

  • Inability to tolerate light or loud noises.

2012 Outbreak of Meningitis in United States

The outbreak of fungal meningitis was first detected in Tennessee. As many as 65 cases were reported in nine states of the United States, as of 6 October 2012.

The death toll from fungal meningitis has rose to seven on 6 October 2012. As many as 65 cases were reported in nine states. Those affected the fungal meningitis fell ill after receiving steroid injections linked to a pharmaceutical plant in Massachusetts.

As of 11 October 2012, more than 130 people in 11 states have been sickened and 12 died by the outbreak.

The death toll from the outbreak has reached 14 on 12 October 2012, as two more cases were reported. 169 people in 11 states have contracted fungal meningitis after receiving spinal injections of methylprednisolone acetate for back pain. As many as 14,000 people may have been exposed to the suspect steroid and 76 clinics in 23 states have received methylprednisolone acetate from the recalled lots. They have been instructed to notify all the affected patients.

As of 15 October 2012, the deaths from the outbreak were reported to be 15 and infected 199 others in 15 states.

As of 18 October 2012, the toll reaches 20 deaths and 257 people sickened in 16 states.

Other Type of Infections

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reported on 15 Oct 2012 that the products that is linked to the growing meningitis outbreak may also cause other types of infections in patients who have had eye operations or open-heart surgery. The new warning was issued based on two cases and it is not known for sure whether there the drugs had cause the infections.

Allegations

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick said that specialty pharmacy linked to the meningitis outbreak may have misled the regulators and may have done work beyond the scope of its state license.

FDA investigators visit Company tied to outbreak

The investigators from the Food and Drug Administration visited the New England Compounding Center in Framingam, Mass. The visit comes at a time when there were rumors that the federal government was preparing a case against the company for the deadly meningitis outbreak. The outbreak led to the deaths of 16 people and sickening more than 200. A spokesman for New England Compounding said that agents had come with a warrant.

CDC confirms tainted vials as the source of Meningitis outbreak

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) confirmed on 18 October 2012 that tainted vials of a steroid from a specialty pharmacy are the reason behind the deadly meningitis attack that has affected at least 16 states, sickening 257 people and killing 20. The technicians at the CDC labs have found only one drug that is definitely linked the outbreak.
