Dementia

Dementia is a serious loss of global cognitive ability in a previously unimpaired person, beyond what might be expected from normal aging. It may be static, the result of a unique global brain injury, or progressive, resulting in long-term decline due to damage or disease in the body. Although dementia is far more common in the geriatric population, it can occur before the age of 65, in which case it is termed "early onset dementia".

Studies show that Diabetes increases dementia risk and is especially strong if the onset of diabetes occurs in middle age.

Dementia with Lewy bodies

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is a type of dementia closely associated with both Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. It is characterized anatomically by the presence of Lewy bodies, clumps of alpha-synuclein and ubiquitin protein in neurons, detectable in post mortem brain histology.

Lewy body dementia affects 1.3 million individuals in the United States alone. Lewy body dementia is difficult to diagnose and often misdiagnosed as Alzheimer's, Parkison's disease or a psychiatric disorder.

Patients suffering with Lewy body dementia will have problems with executive function. Struggling to handle complex tasks, visuospatial problems and finding it hard to navigate or perceive distances are related to the disease.
