Baz enjoyed traditional dance and heard some legendary local stories of Miriwoong and Gajirrawoong communities at Kununurra shooting for the movie. He said shooting the film Australia is a punishment as the set was struck by a string of problems. He had to face cast and crew illnesses, food poisoning and a host of other setbacks to complete the film. Baz Luhrmann was in Sydney for the premier of Australia on November 18, 2008.

Melanie Reid of Times, a British newspaper criticised Luhrmann made big mistake casting Nicole Kidman for the movie.
