International Day of the Girl Child


The United Nations has declared October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child. The first observance of the International Day of the Girl Child was observed on 11 October 2012.

The day observes for more opportunity for girls and increases awareness of inequality faced by girls worldwide based upon their gender.

Various events around the world are planned to observe the day in several countries. The United Nations has sponsored a concert in Mumbai, India.

The first 'International Day of the Girl Child' will focus on ending child marriages and highlighting challenges in countries like India, Bangladesh and Somalia. Anju Malhotra, who is with the Gender and Rights in UNICEF said, "The International Day of the Girl Child readily reflects the need to put girls' rights at the centre of development,"
