Team Anna Splits


Team Anna, on September 19, 2012 (Wednesday) suffered a split as anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare and social activist Arvind Kejriwal parted ways. Hazare has opposed to Kejriwal’s plans of forming a political party. However, Kejriwal showed Anna Hazare the survey conducted through social networking sites which shows there is overwhelming support to following a political path.

A nine-hour meeting was held in New Delhi on September 19 came to an end with Hazare prohibiting the Kejriwal camp not to use his name or photo in his campaigns. Justice Santosh Hegde and Kiran Bedi supported Anna Hazare and were against forming a political party, while Arvind Kejriwal, Prashant Bhushan and Shanti Bhushan favored the political option.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Anna Hazare said, "It is unfortunate that the team has separated ... I will not join any party or any group. I will not go for their campaign. I have told them not to use my photo or my name in their campaign. You fight on your own… My best wishes are with them. There is no harm in it. If they think that they can get majority in Parliament, it is good ... The paths have been separated. Both of us have chosen our.”

Bollywood actor Anupam Kher was present in the meeting and favored forming a political party to fight against corruption.


Hazare blames Kejriwal for wrecking the campaign

Anna Hazare accused Arvind Kejriwal of wrecking the anti-corruption campaign because of his political ambitions. In his blog on 28 September 2012, Anna Hazare reiterated that he had nothing to do with Kejriwal’s political party and said that it was launched against his wishes. Hazare also warned the people not to believe everyone who uses his names and associates with his anti-corruption movement.

Kejriwal meets Anna for the first time after rift

For the first time after the rift, Arvind Kejriwal has met Anna Hazare in Delhi to seek his blessings. The meeting happened at ND Tiwari Bhavan near ITO on 1 Oct 2012, a day before Arvind Kejriwal is expected to announce his political party.

Following the meeting, Anna Hazare has said that he would support Arvind Kejriwal if he fights the election. Speaking to the public, Hazare said "When asked if I was averse to Arvind Kejriwal fighting elections, I answered in the 'no'. In fact, if I know of any worthy candidate, then I would happily propose his name for Kejriwal's outfit. And if Arvind himself stands for elections, I will support him. If he stands opposite Kapil Sibal from Chandani Chowk, I will even campaign for him."

Reactions

Arvind Kejriwal expressed shock and surprise over Anna Hazare's decision to snap ties with his group. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi on 20 September 2012, Kejriwal said "We respect Anna Hazare, he is our guru and father. Yesterday's developments came as a complete surprise. It was shocking, unbelievable, unfortunate and sad". Kejriwal met with some of his supporters to chalk out the strategy for his political party. "Anna's photograph and name are printed in our hearts. We will continue to take his blessings and touch his feet. Anna's five principles will become foundation of our party," he said.

Congress leader Digvijay Singh congratulated Anna Hazare for breaking ties with Kejriwal's group. He also warned Anna to stay cautious against RSS who are trying to make him team up with Baba Ramdev.
