Samajwadi Party to stage Protests

The ruling Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, who are opposing FDI in retail, have called for state-wide protests on September 20 against Centre's decision. Samajwadi Party spokesman told reporters on Sunday that the Chief Minister and state-unit president Akhilesh Yadav has taken the decision to go ahead with protests and called on all district presidents and general secretaries of the party to prepare a strategy.

CPI-ML state secretary Sudhakar Yadav said that their party workers would stage protests across the state.

The Bahujan Samaj Party is staying away from the bandh.

Auto Drivers join strike

The transportation in Ghaziabad and Noida in Uttar Pradesh will be hit in Uttar Pradesh as auto unions have decided to join the general strike.

Education Institutions

Private educational institutions in Uttar Pradesh have declared a holiday, though the government has not ordered the schools to remain closed.

Trains blocked

The party workers of Bharatiya Janata Party staged a sit-in on railway tracks in Varanasi. The Samajwadi Party workers also stopped the trains in Mathura, Agra, Varanasi, Allahabad and Lucknow.

The Mumbai-Howrah train has been stopped by Samajwadi Party workers early in the day in Allahabad.

Demonstrations

BJP workers and trade union leaders blocked the Agra-Gwalior Highway by burning tyres on the roads.

Demonstrations were staged outside a Walmart store at Sultanpur road in Lucknow protesting FDI in multi-brand retail.
