About Sankararaman murder case

The Sankararaman murder case is a sensational case related to the murder of Sankararaman, Managing Trustee of the Lord Varadaraja Perumal temple at Kancheepuram on September 3, 2004. Kanchi Sankaracharya's, Jayendra Saraswathi and his junior Vijayendra Saraswathi are the main accused in the case.

The Shankaracharya was arrested on November 14, 2004 by the Tamil Nadu police in Andhra Pradesh's Mahaboobnagar District.

Following a petition filed by the pontiff, the Supreme Court on October 26, 2005 shifted the trial against the seer from the Principal Sessions Court, Chengalpattu in Tamil Nadu to the District and Sessions Court, Puducherry. The apex court on May 2, 2006 had also stayed the trial before the session court, Puducherry after the seer opposed Tamil Nadu Government's move to appoint its own public prosecutor for the trial.

On July 22, 2008 the Supreme Court of India allowed a special leave petition by Jayendra Saraswathi for appointment of a Public Prosecutor from Puducherry to conduct the trial. Earlier, the Principal and District Sessions Judge of Puducherry, D Krishnaraja, had adjourned the hearing of the case in view of the pendency of a petition filed by Jayendra Saraswathi in the Supreme Court, challenging the continuation of the Special Public Prosecutor of Tamil Nadu even after the case was transferred in Puducherry. The Supreme Court had reserved its order on the seer''s petition and had earlier transferred the trial from a Kancheepuram court to Puducherry.

The case came up for hearing before the Principal and District and Session Judge of Puducherry D Krishnaraja on November 21, 2008 but out of the 24 accused, only 12 were present. The two main accused Kanchi Sankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi and junior seer Vijayendra Saraswathi are amongst the absentees. The Judge listened to the special public prosecutor N Devadoss and the defence counsel and fixed December 18 the date for next hearing. The case has come up for hearing before the Puducherry court on December 18, 2008.
