S-band Spectrum Scam

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) have started inquires into a agreement made in 2005 between Antrix Corporation Ltd. And Devas Multimedia Private Ltd. The Antrix Corporation Ltd. is an arm of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

The agreement made relates to launching of two satellites for Devas Multimedia Private Ltd. It is learnt that a large hidden benefit for Devas was present in the agreement made. The benefit involves usage of 70 MHZ of the S-band spectrum over a period of 20 years. The S-band spectrum is a scarce resource.

The preliminary estimates points to a loss of Rs. 2 lakh crore (2,00,000 crore) to the exchequer. In comparision, the loss to the exchequer in the 2G Spectrum Scam is Rs. 1.76 lakh crore.
