About Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Polls

Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections are scheduled to be conducted in seven phases. An increased womens participation in the elections is observed. There is a marked increase in the number of candidates in the first four phases as compared to last time. The Kashmir division reported double the number of candidates in fray.

First phase

About 64 per cent participation is reported in the first phase of the elections despite the separatists call for the election boycott.

Second phase

About 65 per cent voting is reported in the second phase of the elections.

Third phase

Elections to be held on November 30, 2008.

On November 28, 2008, Farooq campaigned at the Doda district as part of the elections.

Fourth phase

18 Assembly seats to go for polling, including, Baramulla, Budgam, Reasi and Udhampur districts where polling will be held on December 7. Congress President Ms Sonia Gandhi will be addressing public meetings in Uri, Doda. Security arrangements for the elections are put in place. Fourth phase polling began at 8 AM.

Fifth phase

The Fifth phase of Jammu & Kahmir elections will be held on December 13, 2008. 11 constituencies are Tral, Pampore, Pulwama and Rajpora in Pulwama district, Wachi and Shopian in Shopian district and Bani, Basohli, Kathua, Billawar and Hiranagar in Kathua district will be covered in this election phase. Fifth phase election arrangements are being done. About 57 percent polling is reported in the fifth phase.

Sixth phase

The Sixth phase of Jammu & Kahmir elections will be held on December 17, 2008. Election arrangements are put in place as sixteen constituencies spread over five districts of Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Anantnag and Kulgam will go to polls in this phase. More than 11.65 lakh voters, including over 5.62 lakh women, will exercise their franchise. 1,268 polling booths have been set up for the purpose.

Seventh and final phase of Assembly Elections

The assembly election notification for the seventh and final phase was released on November 26, 2008. The constituencies, including the Hazratbal, Zadibal, Idgah, Khanyar, Habba Kadal, Amira Kadal, Sonawar and Batamaloo in Srinagar district, Samba and Vijaypur in Samba district, Nagrota, Gandhinagar, Jammu East, Jammu West, Bishnah, R S Pura, Marh, Suchetgarh, Raipur Domama, Akhnoor and Chhamb in Jammu district will go to polls on December 24. The last date for filing of nominations is December 3 and scrutiny of nomination forms will take place on December 6.

As many as 1,872 polling stations would be set up for an electorate of 16,91,797 in the 21 constituencies. Counting of votes would be held on December 28.

Counting

The vote counting process for the 87 assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir began at 22 centres in district headquarters across the state on the morning of December 28, 2008.
