Impact on the United States

Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast of the United States on Monday. 13 people were killed an estimated 5.2 million people lost power in the New York City.

Hurricane Sandy was downgraded to a massive storm after it hit southern New Jersey. It brought winds at more than 85-mph.

New York

The Hurricane Sandy killed at least 13 people as of 29 October 2012. The deaths were reported in New Jersey, New York, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Some people were killed by falling trees.

Power outage

At least 5.2 million people were without power in the East Coast. This is the most since the 2003 blackout. The MTA has cut power to some subway tunnels in lower Manhattan as a precaution after water came into stations and tracks.

Patients Evacuated from Hospitals

One of the New York City's major hospitals, the New York University Tisch Hospital, were forced to evacuate patients late Monday as it was affected by the power cuts. The backup power system also failed in the hospital. More than 200 patients including 20 babies from neonatal intensive care were forced to evacuate. Patients were shifted to other hospitals including Mount Sinai and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer.

Fire destroys 100 houses

About 100 houses were destroyed by a fire in New York City borough of Queens. The fire was caused by the Superstorm Sandy. More than 190 firefighters worked hard to contain the fire. Two civilians suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital. The fire was reported around 11 p.m. on 29 October 2012.

Many of the New Yorkers are still without power, heat and food on 3 November 2012 in the wake of the devastating superstorm Sandy. Meanwhile, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has cancelled the annual New York City Marathon.

New Jersey

An estimated 116,000 residents in New Jersey were under mandatory evacuation orders. The nearby Atlantic City has been flooded. Officials of the National Guard are trying to rescue 500 people from their homes.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie spoke to "CBS This Morning" on 30 October 2012 in the wake of the Superstorm Sandy. He said, "The state of New Jersey took it in the neck worse than any other state. It's going to take us a while to dig out from under it, but we will dig out from under it."

The Governor also praised President Barack Obama for the storm response. "I was on the phone for the third time yesterday, last night, with the president of the United States. He called me at midnight last night as he was seeing reports. The cooperation has been great with FEMA here on the ground and the cooperation from the president of the United States has been outstanding. He deserves great credit," Christie said.

Bruce Springsteen, Stones, Paul McCartney, Jon Bon Jovi, Kanye West and others performed at a concert in New York's Madison Square Garden on 12 December 2012 to raise money for victims of the Superstorm Sandy. The concert reached a billion fans via TV, Web, radio and theaters. More than $35 million was raised through ticket sales.
