2012 ASEAN Summit

The 2012 Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit was hosted by Cambodia in the capital city of Phnom Penh from November 18-20, 2012. The three-day event is the 21st ASEAN Summit. Leaders of the 10-nation ASEAN bloc will attend the summit. The 10 ASEAN members are Cambodia, Brunei, Laos, Indonesia, Burma, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam and Thailand.

The ASEAN bloc leaders will discuss the following issues at the 2012 ASEAN Summit.

  • Territorial disputes
  • Declaration on Human Rights
  • Economic cooperation and ethnic unrest in Burma between Rakhine Buddhists and Muslim Rohingya

The nations are also expected to present a united claim against China's territorial claims in South China Sea. China claims nearly all of the resource-rich regions in South China Sea against sovereign claims by Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan.

U.S. President Barack Obama will attend the summit on the final day and is expected to raise human-rights issues.
