2011 Cricket World Cup


The 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup is held jointly by India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka from February 19, 2011 till April 2, 2011. India won the World Cup 2011 defeating Sri Lanka by 6 wickets.

The Warmup matches will be played from February 12 till 18th.

The International Cricket Council said that the controversial umpire decision review system (DRS) will be used at the tournament despite the technological glitches raised by several players.

In October 2009, ICC announced the groups for 2011 World Cup. India will take on Bangladesh in its first match of 2011 World Cup tournament on February 19 in Mirpur, Dhaka.

14 teams are divided into two groups and will play the Group Stage of the World Cup. Four teams from Group A and four from Group B will advance to the Quarter final stage.

Pakistan as venue

Earlier, Pakistan is picked as a co-host for the conduction of the games. However because of the 2009 Terror attacks on Sri Lankan Cricket Team, the ICC expressed serious doubts about matches in Pakistan. In his column in The New Zealand Herald, Adam Parore recommended that the World Cup should be moved out from sub-continent amidst the precarious security condition in the region. In April 2009, the ICC has denied Pakistan hosting right for any match of the World Cup.

In November 09, a nine-member team of the ICC visited the Sardar Patel stadium in Motera, on the outskirts of Ahmedabad to inspect the venue where three 2011 World Cup matches are to be played.

Experts Comments

Sourav Ganguly opined that there are no favorites for the 2011 World Cup. He said that the new format of World Cup would benefit teams even if they lose a couple of games.

Imran Khan said that Pakistan had the worst preparation for the World Cup, but are still capable of winning the World Cup.
