About 2009 May Indonesian air plane crash

An Indonesian airplane from Jakarta to Madiun, East Java carrying about 100 onboard is crashed in a housing village near Madiun. The exact number of causalities is not yet clearly known according to a statement made by air force spokesman Bambang Soelistyo. A local official said the survivors are severly burnt and are rushed to the hospital. SCTV television channel confirmed some bodies are recovered. Primary sources say only the tail of the airplane is left indicating of a possible high number of causalities in the incident.

The Hercules Alpha 125 C-130 air plane, a Indonesian military transport plane, left the Halim Perdanakusuma Airport with 13 crew members and 96 passengers on board and crashed on several houses in the Eastern Java region. At least two people on ground are reported dead. The incident occurred at Geplak village, just 4 kms from the Iswahyudi Airport. The incident occurred in the morning of Wednesday May 20, 2009 6:30 am and firefighters extinguished at around 8:30 am.

This air crash in Madiun is significant considering that less than two weeks ago, on May 10, 2009, another Air Force Hercules plane overshot the runway of Wamena airport in Papua. The three decades old aircraft has skid 700 yards before it halted.

The official death toll in the incident is 99. The Government promised it will ground all its Hercules C-130 planes if investigations finds that a mechanical problem has caused the crash. The air crafts is acquired by Indonesia from the US. Military sources say many of the air planes have become useless very quickly because of lack of spare parts to repair them.

The death toll in the plane crash reached 97. More than 10 people were injured in the crash. A spokesman for the Indonesian air force said more than 100 people are on board on the place including 10 children.

Initial death toll in the crash is put at 12. The Sub district head is reported to have said that the tail of 50 ft of the air craft is intact but the front and the body are broken and burnt. A doctor at a hospital near the site of the crash said he is treating four injured with rain concussion and bone fractures.
