2009 Frisking of former Indian President Abdul Kalam


In July 2009 reports came out that former Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam was frisked by an international airline at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport in April 21, 2009 in which there was a clear breach of protocol.

The Government of India soon reacted and has slapped a show cause notice to the US-based Continental Airlines for violating guidelines, in the wake of airliners unpardonable act. Soon after issuing a show cause notice, the government has decided to lodge a case against the airliner. A First Information Report was filed in Delhi. The Government also ordered a probe into the incident after which Continental Airlines came out and formally apologised. The Central Government said Centre knew about Kalam frisking
it was aware of the frisking incident and had issued a show cause notice to the airline on July 9. A few days later, Kalam said he is yet to receive an apology from Continental Airlines.

Soon after, the US-based airline said that they want to apologise personally to him. At the end of July 2009, the Government filed a Kalam frisking: FIR filed against four officials of Continental Airlines in connection with the incident. Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh condemned the incident. Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said airlines operating from India should follow Indian law while frisking.
