Spelman College

Spelman College is a four-year liberal arts women's college located in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. The college is part of the Atlanta University Center academic consortium in Atlanta.

The Spelman College was founded in 1881 as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary. Spelman was the first historically black female institution of higher education to receive its collegiate charter in 1924. It thus holds the distinction of being America's oldest historically black college for women.

Ending NCAA competitive sports budget

In December 2012, Spelman College has decided to cut their NCAA competitive sports budget and instead use the funds to improve the health and wellness of the entire student body. The NCAA funds of Spelman College are typically a million-dollar sports budget used for uniforms, travel and referees. The money will now be used to build a state-of-art gym and wellness programs in the campus. The Spelman students will not be able to participate in NCAA Division III sports from next year onwards.
