Kaushik Basu


Kaushik Basu is an Indian Economist. He is the Chief Economist of the World Bank.

Basu holds a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics. He is on leave from his position as a professor of economics and international studies at Cornell University in New York. Basu previously founded the Centre for Development Economics at the Delhi School of Economics.

On September 5, 2012 Basu is named the new chief economist of the World Bank. He was the chief economic adviser to the government of India before his new position. Basu will replace Justin Lin of China, whose term expired on June 1.

Kaushik Basu will serve in the new position from October onwards, and will serve under the new World Bank President Jim Yong Kim.
