Indian Premier League Season 2

About Indian Premier League Season 2

Indian Premier League Season 2 will be held in South Africa from April 18, 2009. The venue has been changed from India to South Africa after the tournament dates clashed with the 2009 Indian Parliamentary Elections.

Change in IPL venues

The 2009 IPL Twenty20 tournament was originally scheduled to be held from April 10 to May 24, 2009 at Jaipur, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Delhi and two other venues, were to be decided later. However because the dates clashes with the Indian elections, Indian Home Minister P. Chidambaram urged IPL to consider rescheduling tournament dates that clashes with the elections. Former BCCI chief Sharad Pawar supported the Home Ministry view of security concerns following attack on Sri Lankan cricketers. On March 6, 2009 Modi announced that there will be no IPL matches on election counting days and that that are working on a schedule, which was a 'cumbersome process'. Few days later that Andhra Pradesh Police came out and said they cannot provide security till April 23 in view of the elections.
