Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso is a Nobel Prize-winning Tibetan spiritual leader.

Personal Biography

Childhood

Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso fled into exile in 1959 against the Chinese rule after an unsuccessful uprising in Tibet.

Health

Dalai Lama was admitted at a Mumbai hospital in August 2008 on gallbladder-related trouble. Later in October 2008, Dalai Lama visited India for a routine medical check-up and was admitted at Sir Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi. He underwent tests for abdominal discomfort and had a gallstone removal surgery. His condition stabilized as Tibetans in large numbers prayed for long life of Dalai Lama. He is likely to be discharged from the hospital on October 14, 2008.

Thoughts and views

Dalai Lama says he is inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's non-violance teachings and said India is his second home, after Tibet. Lama termed India might not be a pro-Tibetian but is a pro-Justice country.

In November 08, he ruled out retirement and expressed hope of returning to Tibet.

In December 08, he addressed the European Parliament and said that China has to improve moral authority to be seen as a super power. China has earlier pulled out of the annual summit and business forum with the EU in protest at French President Sarkozy's plans to see Dalai Lama exile in Poland at a celebration honouring Nobel Peace Prize winners. Members of the European Parliament applauded his speech and raised the stakes further by demanding that the issue of Tibet feature on the agenda of future EU/China discussions.

In September 09, the Indian Government approved Lama's visit to Arunachal Pradesh. Indian Foreign Affairs Minister S M Krishna clarified Lama is free to visit any part of India and that Arunachal Pradesh is a part of India.
