Mary Kom


Mary Kom is an Indian boxer who won the bronze medal in the 51 kg in women's flyweight event at the 2012 London Olympics.

Mary Kom is a five-time World Boxing champion, and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships.

2012 Olympics

Mary Kom is the only female boxer from India to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics. She won a bronze medal in the 51 kg flyweight event. She lost the semifinal bout against Great Britain's Nicola Adams 11-6.

Mary Kom was rewarded with 75 lakhs by the Manipur government for her achievements.

Mary Kom met Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi along with other Indian olympic medalists.

National Icon of Election Commission

The Election Commission of India has made Mary Kom as a national icon. She, along with badminton player and Olympic bronze-medal winner Saina Nehwal were made national icons, in order to help promote voter participation in the Gujarat elections in December 2012.
