Saina Nehwal (born March 17, 1990) is an Indian Women Badminton player. She currently ranked number 4 in the world by Badminton World Federation.


Honorary Doctorate

On 4 November 2012, Saina Nehwal was honored with an honorary doctorate by the Mangalayatan University in Aligarh. She was even offered a Lok Sabha ticket to contest by the Samajwadi party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav.


Saina Nehwal has launched her autobiography titled 'Playing to Win' in Delhi on 29 November 2012. Yuvraj Singh was also present at the launch event.

Professional Career

Saina is the first Indian girl to win the World Junior Badminton Championships. She made history on June 21, 2009 by becoming the first Indian to win a Super Series tournament after clinching the Indonesia Open with a stunning victory over higher-ranked Chinese Lin Wang in Jakarta. Saina won her second career super series title by lifting the Singapore Open Super series title on June 20, 2010. She completed a hat-trick in the same year by winning Indonesian Open on June 27, 2010. This win resulted in her rise to 3rd ranking. This remains her highest career ranking. She is honoured with Padma Shri which she dedicated to her parents.

In 2012, Saina Nehwal won the Olympic bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics. She moved up to No. 4 in the badminton rankings after her Olympic performance.

As a badminton player

In March 2009, she bowed out of the Indian Open after losing a tough quarter-final encounter of the Womens singles badminton to Malaysias Julia Pei Xian.

In June 2009, she is back in form when she defeated Chinas World No. 3 Wang Lin to win her maiden Super Series title and the Indonesian Open in Jakarta. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh congratulated her on the occassion.

In July 2009, she was down with chicken pox.

In August 09, she resumed practice eyeing for the World Badminton Championships. However, her dream shortlived with her quarter-final match defeat against second seed Chinese Lin Wang.

She could not participate in the China Masters Open due to negligence on part of the BAI, who forgot to send her entry for the tournament on time.

In February 2010, she said that the launch of Badminton Association of India's (BAI) new model of financial governance will help the underprivileged players.

Third Super Series title - Indonesian Open June 2010

In June 2010, she won the third Super Series (Indonesian Open) title making her win the title thrice in a row. Her coach Pullela Gopichand termed her hat-trick as a phenomenal achievement. Her father said that her Indonesian Open title win was the result of her immense hard work and determination.

She received an outstanding welcome when she arrived in her hometown Hyderabad. On July 2010, the scientists of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) felicitated Nehwal.

Saina Nehwal successfully defended the Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold trophy in Basel, Switzerland on March 18, 2012. She beat third ranked Shixian 21-19, 21-16 in a 48-minute match. It was her first title in the 2012 season.

Brand Ambassador

Saina Nehwal is the brand ambassador of Deccan Chronicle, who is also the IPL team Deccan Chargers. She has paid an advance tax of Rs. 70 lakh on the 3-4 crore she was supposed to receive as part of deal.

In July 2012, Saina Nehwal signed a 40-crore deal with Rhiti Sports.

Sahara India Pariwar has announced its association with Saina Nehwal on December 18, 2012. Saina Nehwal will don Sahara logo while playing at tournaments worldwide. Speaking about the association, Nehwal said, "It's a great honour to be associated with Sahara India Pariwar which apart from being a huge business conglomerate, has also done tremendously for the cause of promotion of sports in India. This has certainty boosted my confidence and I am sure that I will be able to bring pride to the nation."

National Icon of Election Commission

Saina Nehwal, along with Mary Kom, have been made 'national icons' by the Election Commission to help promote voter participation in forthcoming elections in Gujarat in December 2012.

2012 Olympics

Saina Nehwal won the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Her chinese opponent withdrew in the bronze medal play-off match. Saina became the first Indian badminton player to win an Olympic medal. In December 2011, Saina Nehwal said that she hopes that she regains form ahead of the Olympics.

In September 2012, Saina Nehwal has gifted Rs. 2 lakh from her personal earnings to Paralympic silver medalist Girisha.

Denmark Open Super Series Premier trophy

Saina Nehwal won the Denmark Open Super Series Premier trophy. She beat German's Juliane Schenk on 21 October 2012 in Odense in Denmark. It was an easy final for the World No. 4 as she beat Schenk 21-17 and 21-8 in just 35 minutes.The Denmark Open title is Nehwal's fourth title in 2012. "My right knee was not really in perfect shape but I thank God for giving me the energy to win the title," she said after her victory.

Nehwal beat world number one Yihan Wang of China in the semi-finals.

French Open Super Series badminton

Saina Nehwal lost in the final of the French Open Super Series badminton in Paris on 28 October 2012. Minatsu Mitani of Japan denied Nehwal her third straight Super Series title this year. Nehwal lost 21-19, 21-11 in the match that lasted 39-minutes.

BWF World Super Series Finals

Saina Nehwal lost her first match of the BWF World Super Series Finals against Swiss rival Tine Baun on 12 December 2012.

Nehwal lost her second consecutive women's singles Group B match against Thai Ratchanok Intanon in straight sets (21-13, 21-16) on 13 December 2012. The loss virtually puts her out of contention for a berth in the semi-finals.Nehwal will next play World No. 4 Juliane Schenk of Germany.

Syed Modi International Grand Prix Gold

She successfully defended the Syed Modi International Grand Prix Gold badminton title. She defeated reigning world champion Carolina Marin 19-21, 25-23, 21-16 to win her first title of 2015. Saina Nehwal also rose to number 3 in World Badminton rankings during the tournament. Jan 25, 2015
