About 2009 Nobel Peace Prize

The 2009 Nobel Preace Prize was won by US President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts in strengthening international diplomacy and for taking landmark initiatives to create a nuclear-free world.

Norwegian Nobel Committee said it has received 205 nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009. This is the highest number of nominations ever. The last record was in 2005 when the Committee received 199 nominations. 33 of the total nominations are organisations.

The members of the committee are Thorbjørn Jagland, Kaci Kullmann Five, Sissel Marie Rønbeck, Inger-Marie Ytterhorn and Agot Valle

2009 Nobel Peace Prize Nominations

The Committee invites nominations from 'qualified people'. The last date for submitting the nominations is February. The list will be finalized by the last week of February. The Committee carries out preparatory work between March to August and makes the final selection in September. The award ceremony is held in Oslo on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel's death.

While the names of nominees are kept secret by the institute for 50 years, those who have nominate are allowed to reveal the name of the person or organisation they have nominated can be revealed if they wish so. It is reported that French President Nicolas Sarkozy are nominated for the prize.
