Pratibha Ray has written over 40 novels, travelogues and short stories.

On 27 December 2012, Pratibha Ray has been named for the prestigious Jnanpith Award for the year 2011. She was announced the winner at a meeting chaired by writer and Jnanpith Award winner Sitakant Mahapatra. The Jnanpith Award carries a cash prize of Rs. 7 lakh and a citation.
