About Kingfisher Airways

Kingfisher Airways is an India-based airliner with both domestic and international airliner. Dr. Vijay Mallya is the Chairman and Managing Director of the company. Sanjay Agarwal is the CEO of the company.

Timeline

Kingfisher Airways launched its operations in May 2005. It is the first Indian airliner to launch with all new airplanes. Further, it is the first Indian airliner to order the Airbus A380.

In January 07, the airliner launched direct flights between Bangalore and Tiruchirapally and later between Bangalore and Thiruvananthapuram. During the month, Kingfisher Airlines bagged the 2006 Avaya Global Connect Award for Customer Responsiveness. The airliner inaugurated a 'State of the Art' City Ticketing Office in Kolkata.

In February 07, the airliner re-engineered Guest Processing Functions with Multi-Million Dollar Deal with Sabre Airline Solutions.

In March 07, Kingfisher became the first Indian airliner to offer a premium first class service on domestic routes with the launch of its direct flights to Agatti from Kochi and stop-over flights from most major cities in India. This makes it the only private airline from India to launch a service to this destination.

Celebrating its second anniversary in May 2007, the company brought Airbus A380 on its maiden visit to India.

In October 2008, Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways are reported to have broached a possible alliance to overcome their problems, largely generated by mounting fuel bills in wake of the global financial crisis. However, the next day, Mallya and Naresh Goyal quashed them as rumors.


Kingfisher Airways reduced its morning flights from Mumbai on Thursday, November 27, 2008 in the wake of Mumbai terror attacks.

In January 09, Kingfisher teamed up with Hilton HHonors - the guest rewards program for the more than 3,000 Hilton Family Hotels worldwide.

In February 09, Kingfisher announced cut in its pilots salaries by Rs. 80,000. During the month flights between Solapur and Mumbai are announced.

On September 15, 2009, a Kingfisher Airlines Mumbai to Bangalore flight made an emergency landing at Mumbai Airport soon after take-off after its landing gear malfunctioned. Guinness heiress Clare Irby, accused of indulging in a sex act on a Bangalore-London flight, has been cleared of being drunk on board the Kingfisher Airlines aircraft.

In November 09, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued guidelines to all airlines following the skidding of the Kingfisher aircraft in Mumbai.

In May 2010, a Lucknow-bound Kingfisher Airlines flight had to be grounded following a bomb scare.

On May 18, 2012 the Government said that Kingfisher owed Rs. 269 crore to the income Tax department. The Government says that Penalty and Prosecution proceedings have been initiated against the company.

Kingfisher Airlines financial crisis

As of September 2012, Kingfisher Airlines is going through some financial troubles. The Airlines owes more than Rs. 7000 crore in bank loans from 17 banks. State Bank of India has the maximum exposure at Rs. 1400 crore.

Employees Strike

The Airlines staff and engineers joined a strike on October 1, 2012. Kingfisher Airlines has announced a partial lockout effective immediately on October 2, 2012.

DGCA issues show-cause notice

The DGCA has issued a show-cause notice to Kingfisher Airlines on 5 October 2012 seeking an explanation on why it should not suspend or cancel the permit of Kingfisher Airlines. The DGCA said that the notice has been issued under Section 15(2)(b) of Schedule XI of the Aircraft Rules of 1937.

Etihad Airways

The Gulf Carrier Etihad Airways is likely to buy a 48 per cent stake in the Kingfisher Airlines. The stake will be bought for a little over Rs. 3000 crore. Sources say a formal announcement on the same could be made on December 18, 2012.

Kingfisher airlines, on December 11, 2012 denied making any deal with Etihad Airway. They however said that they are in discussions with several investors for equity partnership in the Airlines.

Union Civil Aviation minister Ajit Singh said that DGCA had not received any revival plan from the Kingfisher Airlines. The DGCA needs to be satisfied that the Kingfisher Airlines has enough financial strength before resuming its operations. The license of Kingfisher Airlines will expire on December 31.

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has refused to give permission to Kingfisher's plans to restart operations. AAI has told Kingfisher to pay up the dues of Rs. 300 crore before they can consider giving its nod to resume operations. AAI has conveyed the same to DGCA who sought its views. Dec 28, 2012

Financial Numbers

As of 11 December 2012, Kingfisher Airlines has a market capitalisation of Rs 1,267.23 crore. The airline owes Rs 190 crore in service tax dues. It has a 10,000 crore in accumulated losses and owes Rs 7000 crore to 17 banks.
