Longest Runway

In August 2008, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Praful Patel inaugurated the new runway which is India's longest airport runway which is 2.75-mile-(4.4-kilometer)-long and the third in the row. The new runway developed by Delhi International Airport private limited under a public private partnership initiative has been completed ahead of its scheduled date of February 2009. The run way is open for normal use since August 28, 2008 and is likely to ease the congestion at the international airport.

Waiting to be charged at pickup lane

The Delhi airport would soon be charging to wait at the pickup lane outside the domestic terminal 1C of the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The cars are allowed to wait at the pickup lane for five minutes, after which they will be charged Rs. 100 for next five minutes. An additional Rs. 50 would be charged for every five minutes beyond that. Private airport operator Dial has installed a system wherein each private car entering the pickup lane would be issued a receipt with entry time printed on it. The fee for waiting would have be paid at the pay booth on the way out. Loss of receipt would be charged an additional fee of Rs. 500.

Problems at IGI Airport

Delhi experiences chilly weather situations during winter and fog is often a problem for flight operations at the airport.

The schedule of over 140 flights at the IGI Airport have been affected due to dense fog on the fourth consecutive day. Jan 2, 2013

  • On January 19, 2009, Six flights were delayed and thirty cancelled owing to zero visibility conditions and dense fog.
  • In February 2010, Delhi police detained a 61-year old American national at the airport just before he was to was to board a Qatar- bound flight after a sharp object was found in his baggage.
  • In March 2010, an alleged breach of security protocol at the Airport happened when an intruder jumped forcibly over the emergency gate of the airport in the morning.
