Crisis, Restructuring plans

In 2007, Indian Airlines merged with Air India.

In June 09, the management has asked its top staff to forgo July 09 pay as a gesture to help the airline suffering from a financial crisis. An internal communique announcing the top staff salary cut came just four days after Unions said they will go on strike from July 1, 2009 if they are not paid their salaries. Serious restructuring plans began to be put in action starting July 09. As announced earlier, on July 3, 2009, employees went on a two hour protest over non-payment of wages

On July 7, 2009, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel that a major revamp of top management would be carried out in 30 days and it would start low-cost domestic operations in a bid to turn around cash-strapped Air India in the next two years.

In September 09, the airliner said it will cut incentives for executive staff as a part of its revival move. The incident has made pilots to go on strike.

2012 Pilots' Strike

The Air India Pilots went on a massive strike in May 2012. The Indian Pilots Guild (IPG) is leading the agitation. Over 200 pilots reported sick and didn't show up to work. As of May 17, 2012 the strike entered the tenth day.

The demands of the pilots include: Justice Dharmadhikari report on human resource issues, including career progression and promotion of pilots.

May 9, 2012: Delhi High Court terms the Pilots strike illegal. Reprimands the Indian Pilots Guild.

May 11, 2012: More than 100 passengers were stranded in various hotels in Muscat because of the pilots' strike.

May 15, 2012: Strike entered eighth day. Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh says that contingency plan is the only option available.

May 16, 2012: Air India Pilots Strike enters ninth day. Contingency Plans were enforced and Air India begins international operations to the U.S. and Europe. At least nine international flights from Mumbai and Delhi were cancelled.

May 17, 2012: Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh has said that he will meet the representatives of recognized trade unions of Air India next week. Union Minister Praful Minister said that adequate steps were taken by the aviation ministry to end the impasse.

Air India pilots grievances

A group of pilots of Air India have sought the intervention of Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh in resolving their grievances of due salaries and allowances. The Indian Commercial Pilots Association general secretary Capt T Praveen Keerthi said, "Our salaries and flying allowances too are pending for months and the uncertainty regarding the schedule of payments has become unbearable," Terming the suicide of a Kingfisher employee wife as unfortunate, the Association has written to Ajit Singh on 8 October 2012 saying their condition is not that dissimilar from that of Kingfisher Airlines.

Air India Dreamliner

Air India has acquired Boeing 787 Dreamliner on September 8, 2012. The flight was to be handed over to Air India in 2008, but was delayed due to various issues. The Dreamliner has a capacity of 256. The rest of the 27 dreamliners ordered by Air India would be delivered by 2016.

The operations have begun on September 19, 2012. The flight will initially be run on domestic routes. The first flight of the Dreamliner will be on Delhi-Chennai route and six more destinations will be added in the future. The international operations for Dreamliner will be in winter.

IICA recommends part privatization of Air India

The Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) has said that Air India should be partly privatized as private investors will focus more on maximizing profit. Part privatization will solve Air India's operational issues, said IICA in a study 'Competitive Framework of Civil Aviation Sector' on 30 September 2012. Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh has recently ruled out privatizing Air India.
