The Dark Knight Rises posts $249 million in opening weekend

Despite the tragic Denver theatre massacre, the batman movie The Dark Knight Rises earned $160.9 million in its opening weekend. The numbers make it the third-best debut of all time and the best ever 2-D movie. The official numbers were delayed for the first time by a day, out of respect for the victims in the Denver massacre came Sunday. The new batman movie is slightly ahead of its predecessor The Dark Knight which made $158.3 million debut in 2008.

The Dark Knight Rises made a strong start worldwide with $249 million. Ice Age: Continental Drift ($20.4 m) which is on its second week and The Amazing Spider-Man ($10.9 m) on its third week took second and third places in the weekend numbers.
