Bollywood superstar Rajesh Khanna passes away at 69

Yesteryear Bollywood superstar Rajesh Khanna passed away Wednesday afternoon at his residence 'Aashirwad' in Mumbai. He was 69. Rajesh Khanna, fondly called 'Kaka' by his fans, has been battling with ill health for a long time, particularly since April. He was admitted to Lilavati Hospital twice in the past month. He was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday, but was on ventilator since last night.

Rajesh Khanna achieved fame in the 1960s. He entered Bollywood film industry in 1966 in the movie 'Aakhri Khat'. Khanna acted opposite Sharmila Tagore in the 1969 hit movie 'Aradhana'. Though, he is known for his roles as romantic hero, Rajesh Khanna has acted in a wide variety of roles. He once acted in 15 consecutive hit movies. His movies – 'Aradhana', 'Haathi Mere Saathi', 'Anand', 'Amar Prem', 'Amado', 'Phir Wohi Raat', 'Dard', 'Dhanwan', 'Avtaar', 'Agar' and 'Tum Na Hote' were super hits. His acting career went over four decades spanning 180 films.

Rajesh Khanna won three Filmfare Best Actor Awards thrice and was nominated for the award 14 times. He was honored with a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. Rajesh Khanna also had a stint in politics and was elected from the New Delhi constituency from 1992 to 1996.

Rajesh Khanna breathed his last in presence of his estranged wife Dimple Kapadia, daughters Rinkie and Twinkle. His son-in-law Akshay Kumar, grand children and close relatives were also present. Hundreds of his fans reached his Aashirwad residence crying when the news broke out.

Son-in-law and actor Akshay Kumar told reporters: "My father-in-law Rajesh Khanna is no more. He has gone to a nice and heavenly place. I am happy that he has gone there and hope that everyone will pray for him," A large number of tributes poured in expressing their condolences. Actors Rishi Kapoor, Prem Chopra, film maker Sahid Khan visited the Khanna's residence to pay homage.

His funeral will take place tomorrow at 11 am.
