A new study has shown that having a baby increases the new mums friend-count by eight, with school playground being the most popular place to meet new people.

London, Jan 7 : A new study has shown that having a baby increases the new mum's friend-count by eight, with school playground being the most popular place to meet new people.

While many women fear losing contact with friends after becoming mothers, new research revealed the contrary.

"Having a baby is life changing. It can be quite daunting for new mums who may think they will lose touch with their pals," the Telegraph quoted Katie Barlow, from CLIC Sargent which polled 4,000 mums as saying.

"But in fact it appears from our survey that they gain a larger group of friends who they see much more often.

They're most likely to meet new acquaintances in the school playground (44 per cent), nursery (32 per cent) and coffee mornings (22 per cent).

One in 10 said they met new friends while working out at the gym.

Eight in 10 mums surveyed were regularly online and two thirds use Facebook to keep in touch with mates and other mums.

While, half of them agreed using email, four in 10 rely on text messages and one in five use instant messaging to chat to and organise get-togethers with other mums.

Nearly half actively joined groups, fundraisers and community projects to help meet new people.
