Sting, wife want to open up opera

Sting wants to popularise opera among his fans and hopes to attract more admires with his latest release, Twin Spirits, where he and wife Trudie Styler narrate the story of composer Robert Schumann.

London, Sept 30 : Sting wants to popularise opera among his fans and hopes to attract more admires with his latest release, Twin Spirits, where he and wife Trudie Styler narrate the story of composer Robert Schumann.

The Twin Spirits is a live theatrical performance featuring Sting and Styler reading the love letters between Schumann and his wife Clara.

The performance narrated by actor Derek Jacobi and directed by John Caird was supported by musicians and opera singers, and was filmed at the Royal Opera House.

The BBC quoted Sting as saying: "It's people who don't normally come to the opera, are not involved in opera, because it's too highbrow or too posh or too expensive.

"There's skill involved in putting an opera on, it's not just singing - it's making sets, it's making wigs, it's making dresses, it's scene-shifting. The idea of bringing that to the wider community appeals to both of us."

A DVD of the Twin Spirits has been released and its proceeds will be used for the Royal Opera House Education Programme.

Sting said: "One of the reasons we were interested, was that the money is going to be used to open the opera house to the wider community."

Styler revealed that she and hubby Sting were never too keen on opera performances until they saw Tosca on Luciano Pavarotti's invitation.he said: "Luciano really made opera populist culture, and I'd like to think in our small way that this is something he'd very uch approve of and we're going to bring in people who don't normally come."
