Recently married The Hills stars Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt may have to tie the knot again - if their Mexico wedding fails to get registered in legal books.
New York, Nov 27 : Recently married 'The Hills' stars Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt may have to tie the knot again - if their Mexico wedding fails to get registered in legal books.
On Nov 20, the couple exchanged vows in an impromptu ceremony at the One and Only Palmilla Resort near Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, reports The New York Daily News.
However, the lovey-dovey pair failed to obtain the requisite marriage license before the ceremony and to their disappointment, Mexico doesn't legally recognize their marriage at this time.
But, Pratt had claimed that they could legalize their union in the United States like other celebrity couples- like Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes-who got married in foreign land,
"Like other elopements that happen outside the country, we'll take care of the legal details when we get home," he told Us magazine.
However, the couple might be in for another shock, as Los Angeles County, where the twosome reside, does not acknowledge marriage ceremonies that take place outside the U.S. without some form of legal acknowledgement from that country's government.
"It won't be legally recognized here. They would need to go to court for that," said Maricela Najera, L.A. County records supervisor.
And in order to ward off the option to go to the court, the couple may have to revise their vows, after following the proper legal channels.
"If they got married without a marriage license then yes, that's an option," said Najera.
Meanwhile, 'Hills' executive producer Liz Gateley has told MTV News that the couple's married life and honeymoon will play a prominent part on The Hills' upcoming fifth season.
She said that cameras are still down in Mexico, where the two eloped last week, filming their honeymoon.
"MTV is currently filming Heidi and Spencer in Mexico, as we were expecting to capture them on vacation. Fans will be able to see the exclusive footage from the ceremony in an upcoming episode, and we will continue to follow the newlyweds' relationship as it plays out in real life," Gateley told MTV News.
