New York Times triumphs at Webby Awards

The New York Times triumphed at this years Webby Awards, bagging eight awards in various categories including news mobile listings and animation.

London, May 8 : The New York Times triumphed at this year's Webby Awards, bagging eight awards in various categories including news mobile listings and animation.

The next in line was satire site The Onion, which got away with seven Webbys, which will be presented in June in New York.

The prestigious awards honour online excellence in a wide range of categories, from retail to music, and each category has two winners from a public vote and jury choice.The New York Times won the main Webby for news, as well as both prizes in the category for best newspaper website.

The BBC News website won the People's Voice prize in the news category and also picked up awards for best music and radio sites. In the radio category it was the BBC World Service, which won the Webby and the music Webby was awarded to BBC Radio One for its Meet the DJs site. Also, BBC Learning won a People's Voice award for its HIV awareness campaign GI Jonny.

After winning the award fourth time in a row, the BBC News website editor Steve Herrmann said it was "fantastic" to win again.

"It shows our audience really value what we do," BBC quoted him, as saying.

While, Apple and National Geographic magazine bagged four awards each, the same went for user-confession site PostSecret.

Both the gongs for the best community category went to photo-sharing site Flickr. The main award for the best social networking site went to Flock, a "social web browser," while Facebook took the people's vote.

The Simpsons Movie website scooped both the prizes in the movie and film category and Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.i.am was announced as the winner of a special achievement prize for his Yes We Can video, which was created to support presidential contender Barack Obama.

The Webby award for best celebrity and fan site was bagged by Annie Lennox's official website.

The main Webby winners as well as the nominees are chosen by members of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences.
