Peter Berg to direct Dune adaptation

American director Peter Berg has signed on to direct a big screen adaptation of Frank Herberts classic sci-fi novel Dune for Paramount Pictures.

Washington, Mar 18 : American director Peter Berg has signed on to direct a big screen adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel "Dune" for Paramount Pictures.

Producer Kevin Misher had spent the past year trying to obtain the rights for the book from the Herbert estate, and he will be producing it via his Par-based shingle.

The 1965 sci-fi novel is a sweeping, futuristic tale set on the remote desert planet Arrakis, which produces the interstellar empire's sole source of the spice Melange, which is used for distant space travel. The story has it that an empire wide power struggle ensues over the control of the spice.

The novel had spawned a 1984 David Lynch film as well as a 2000 Sci Fi Channel miniseries starring William Hurt, and now Berg would be the latest director to have a go at it, reports Variety.

The project is on offer to writers, who will be faithful in producing a version of the Hugo- and Nebula Award-winning book. The filmmakers consider its theme of finite ecological resources particularly timely.

New Amsterdam's Richard Rubenstein, who produced Sci Fi's "Dune" and sequel "Children of Dune," is also producing alongside Sarah Aubrey of Film 44, Berg's production banner. John Harrison and Mike Messina exec produce.
