Get ready for Brokeback - the opera

After the movie Brokeback Mountain created ripples all over the world with its homosexual theme, the Annie Proulx short story is getting set to create the same magic on stage.

Washington, June 9 : After the movie 'Brokeback Mountain' created ripples all over the world with its homosexual theme, the Annie Proulx short story is getting set to create the same magic on stage.

The story will be translated into an opera five years from now.

The New York City Opera has now commissioned an opera based on the hard-hitting book that became the basis for the 2005 Oscar-winning movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal and the late Heath Ledger.

The movie, which was loved by critics and went on to win three Academy Awards, also had its share of controversy with its unabashed portrayal of a homosexual romance between two ranch hands.

City Opera has roped in Charles Wuorinen to compose the opera, which will be launched after 5 years in spring 2013.

"Ever since encountering Annie Proulx's extraordinary story I have wanted to make an opera on it," The New York Daily News quoted Wuorinen, as saying in a statement.
