Clooney boycott may cancel Golden Globe and Oscars

George Clooney will boycott the next weekends Golden Globe Awards and next months Oscars in a show of support for striking writers, sparking fears that the red-carpet extravaganza will be cancelled.

London, Jan 7 : George Clooney will boycott the next weekend's Golden Globe Awards and next month's Oscars in a show of support for striking writers, sparking fears that the red-carpet extravaganza will be cancelled.

The Screen Actors Guild declared that the 70 actors, who have been short listed for Golden Globe Awards, would not attend the ceremony in order to sympathise with scriptwriters who have been on strike for two months.

However, television network NBC, which splits millions of advertising dollars with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, organiser of the Golden Globe Awards, said that the show would go on.

On Jan 4, both bodies revealed that they were in 'an extremely difficult position' and would try to lure back the actors.

NBC network executives believe that Clooney has been persuading other actors not to cross picket lines.

"We know Clooney is a major force behind this decision. He has been ear bashing others who may have been willing to cross picket lines," Times Online quoted one NBC executive, as saying.
