Sean Penn to head Cannes jury

Hollywood star Sean Penn has been named to head the jury of the 2008 Cannes International Film Festival, organizers of the event have announced.

Washington, Jan 4 : Hollywood star Sean Penn has been named to head the jury of the 2008 Cannes International Film Festival, organizers of the event have announced.

The 47-year-old actor, writer and director will follow in the footsteps of Emir Kusturica, Stephen Frears and Wong Kar-Wai, reports Contactmusic.

While accepting the honour, Penn said: "In the last few years it seems there has been a rejuvenation of cinema building worldwide; increasingly thoughtful, provocative, moving, and imaginative films by talented filmmakers: that a new generation of filmmaking may have begun.

"The Cannes Film Festival has long been the epicentre in the discovery of those new waves of filmmakers from all over the world," he added.

The Oscar-winning actor further said that he was keen to be a part of the jury for a very long time.

The Cannes Film Festival will take place between May 14th and 25th.
