London, Jan 11 : Scarlett Johansson is preparing for her role in the upcoming period drama 'Mary Queen of Scots,' by mastering the French.Last year, historical experts criticised actress Samantha Morton for portraying Mary with a thick Scottish dialect in 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age,' despite the fact her accent was known to be French.

"Samantha Morton's portrayal obviously had its critics but it's understood Scarlett will at least play Mary with a French accent. At least that should keep historians happy," the Daily Express quoted a source, as saying.

The film is based on the life of a Roman Catholic woman named Mary who, in 1542, became queen of Scotland at just nine months old.

She later became a rival to the throne of England and was imprisoned for many years on charges of attempting to assassinate Elizabeth I.

She was eventually beheaded in 1587 as per Elizabeths order.

Liverpudlian Jimmy McGovern wrote the script for the film, which is scheduled to start shooting this April in London and Scotland.
