Bridget Jones generation doing the most unpaid overtime

The Bridget Jones generation a.k.a single women in their thirties, do the most unpaid overtime, says a new study.

London, Feb 22 : The 'Bridget Jones generation' a.k.a single women in their thirties, do the most unpaid overtime, says a new study.

The study, conducted by Trade Union Congress (TUC), stated that mums are more likely to leave work on time to care for their children, even when both parents work full time.

"Single women do more unpaid overtime than mothers, fathers and single men," the Telegraph quoted Brendan Barber, general secretary of the TUC, as saying.

"Women who want to get on at work need to put in longer hours than anyone else, but as soon as they have children they no longer have that option," Barber added.

The study found that nearly one in four women in their thirties, or 39 per cent, do unpaid overtime, compared with 26 per cent of men in the same age group.

The proportion of mothers doing unpaid overtime stands at 17 per cent.

Nicola Horlick, a City fund manager who has five children and three stepchildren, said the figures reflected the fact that women were "incredibly hard working".

She added: "Once you have a child it becomes much more difficult, but women are naturally conscientious."
