George Clooney officially becomes UN peace envoy

George Clooney has officially been appointed a United Nations peace envoy after his visit to the organizations headquarters in New York on Jan 31.

Washington, Feb 1 : George Clooney has officially been appointed a United Nations peace envoy after his visit to the organization's headquarters in New York on Jan 31.

The Academy Award-winning actor visited New York, along with his parents, to receive his Messenger Of Peace designation.

Addressing the press, Cooney said discussed the crisis in Sudan's troubled western region, Darfur, and the need to equip the peacekeeping force there.

"There are some groups protecting 250 square kilometres of desert with no helicopters and no radios that work," People quoted him, as saying.

"So either give them the basic tools for protecting the population [and themselves] or have the decency to just bring them all home," he said. "And go back into your offices and wait until it's all over," he added.

The 46-year-old, who has just returned from Darfur, met with some representatives at the meeting disapproving of an actor telling them how to deal with things.

"I am the son of a newsman, so the job of messenger comes with the responsibility to deal with facts, not to tell people what they want to hear, but to tell them what the truth is, unfiltered," Clooney said.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon appointed Clooney U.N.'s ninth Messenger Of Peace by in honour of his campaign to end the four-and-a-half year war in Darfur and increase the region's humanitarian aid.

Other messengers of peace are Michael Douglas, Elie Wiesel, Jane Goodall, Yo-Yo Ma, Daniel Barenboim, Paulo Coelho, Midori Goto and Princess Haya of Jordan.
