McCartney to perform in Ukraine Independence Concert in June

Sir Paul McCartney will perform at a free concert in Ukraine in June.

London, April 25 : Sir Paul McCartney will perform at a free concert in Ukraine in June.

The gig, titled the Independence Concert, will take place at the Independence Square in Kiev.

The former 'Beatle' has revealed that Ukrainian tycoon Viktor Pinchuk, the son-in-law of the former president Leonid Kuchma, has invited him to give the performance.

"Pull together, groove, rock and roll - all together," the BBC quoted McCartney as saying.

"(It would be) a great evening and we hope to see you there," he added.

Pinchuk said that thousands of McCartney's fans in Ukraine had been waiting for him to stage a show in the country.

"For the first time we have the opportunity to hear the songs that changed the world and created a new culture. The songs that we grew up with and became who we are," he said.

Issuing a joint statement, McCartney and the Viktor Pinchuk Foundation said: "The ideology and spirit of The Beatles helped build the democratic aspirations for much of the Soviet society and eventually led to the peaceful collapse of the USSR and the independence of the former Soviet republics."

Last June, Sir Elton John performed to 200,000 people in Independence Square.
