Locals are very furious when the film star criticised Leigh-on-Sea in Essex, in an interview with a US magazine.
"Leigh-on-Sea is not the armpit of England. It is a unique place," the Mirror quoted a local, as telling the Leigh Times.
Another local said: "Many people will be very disappointed in Helen's slur."Dame Helen, 62, has won an Oscar for her lead role in The Queen, and is due to sign copies of her new autobiography at Grindley's Bookstore in that town on September 22.
