US audiences ready for Stones My Lai massacre film

Director Oliver Stone is making a film based on the infamous My Lai massacre when US troops killed up to 500 Vietnamese villagers.

London, Sept 4 : Director Oliver Stone is making a film based on the infamous My Lai massacre when US troops killed up to 500 Vietnamese villagers.

A movie executive revealed that a reason such a film was being made was because American audiences were finally 'ready' to accept that US soldiers were capable of committing atrocities against innocent people, especially in the wake of the torture of prisoners in Abu Ghraib, Iraq.

"The feeling is that audiences are now ready for this story," Daily Express quoted the movie executive, as saying."The behaviour of US troops in Iraq shows that My Lai was no one-off aberration and the modern-day parallels will be impossible to ignore."

"Pinkville", as the film is named, stars Bruce Willis playing the role of Army Gen. William R. Peers, who supervised the investigation of the massacre and Tatum will play Hugh Thompson, a helicopter pilot.

"Pinkville," is the depiction on military maps for the region My Lai.

This would be Stone's fourth film on Vietnam War, followed by Oscar winner "Platoon," "Heaven and Earth" and "Born on the Fourth of July."

Cruise's United Artists is said to be finalising a deal with Stone to finance the movie.

The production of the film will begin early next year if the budget of roughly 40 million dollar is finalized by UA this week.
