Annette Bening has dropped out of Joanna Murray-Smiths play The Female of the Species.

Washington, Sept 22 : Annette Bening has dropped out of Joanna Murray-Smith's play "The Female of the Species."

The actress cited "personal reasons" for walking out of the Geffen Playhouse and Broadway runs of play, reports Variety.

Scripts for the play are now being sent to other leading ladies in a hope that the play will open on schedule at Geffen.

Geffen Playhouse producing director Gil Cates said in a statement: "We wanted to communicate Annette's situation with our subscribers and supporters as soon as possible. We're exploring a range of options."

The play is being helmed by Michael Mayer, and was scheduled to hit open in April on the Great White Way.

It would have been Bening's first Broadway outing in 20 years. She was due to play the role of a feminist literary giant suffering writer's block as deadlines for her new book keep passing. A fan arrives at her doorstep and the writer's life unravels.
